The Oregon Trail
Gameloft Brisbane
About This Game
A modern remake of the classic pioneer journey. Players lead a wagon party roughly 2,000 miles west, managing food, health, morale, hygiene and time before winter, and making tough choices when blizzards, illnesses and broken wagons strike. Hunting and fishing mini-games break up the management, and the whole journey is single-player with optional online events.

Positive Aspects
Risk Factors
Negatives
- •Creative freedom is limited: customisation stops at building and naming your party and picking classes
- •The hunting mini-game involves shooting animals, which the age rating flags as mild violence even though it is bloodless and unrealistic
- •Party members can fall ill and die from dysentery, cholera, typhoid and similar hazards, which may upset sensitive children
- •Contains alcohol and tobacco references, crude humour and mild language
- •No cooperative play: it is a solo experience, so siblings cannot team up in the same journey
Positives
- •Strong learning value: real 19th-century frontier conditions, emigrant motivations and the hard choices pioneers faced are woven into play
- •Builds critical thinking and planning as kids weigh risk, spend supplies and live with the consequences of each decision
- •Includes Native American playable characters and stories developed with Indigenous historians and writers
- •Hunting, fishing and foraging mini-games give younger players a hands-on break from menu management
- •Sold as a premium title with no microtransactions, so there is no in-game store nudging kids to spend
